Home African Caribbean Faithful Jamaican Granny celebrates her 100th Birthday

Caribbean news. A great-great-great grandmother from Stonebridge celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by six generations of her family. More than 150 people attended the party held in honour of Sylvia Green, from Knatchbull Road, on Wednesday.

Due to a chest infection Mrs Green was unable to attend the bash at nearby St Michael’s Hall, so a video link was set up between the party and her home. Michelle Thomas, 46, one of Mrs Green’s granddaughters, said: “We have a very close bond because when I was born she lived next door to us in Kensal Rise.

“She’s very knowledgeable, very witty and she has brilliant one liners considering her age. “I ring her daily to make sure she’s ok. Mrs Green, who has four daughters, one of whom is deceased, 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 27 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild came to the UK from Jamaica more than 60 years ago.

She worked at the Mount Royal Hotel in Marble Arch, starting as a canteen assistant then working her way to being a chef. She was the main cook for her parish at the Beulah Apostolic Church in Church Road, Willesden, many of its worshippers attended her party. Mrs Thomas added that her grandmother’s secret to old age was her faith: “She has a very strong belief in God and says that’s what keeps her going.” Article courtesy http://www.kilburntimes.co.uk
