Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 18, 2013 (SKNIS): Minister of Education, Hon. Nigel Carty delivered words of encouragement and motivation to students of the Saddlers Secondary School during a brief handing over ceremony of books, on Wednesday (April 17), at the school’s Library.
Minister Nigel Carty, in his capacity as Minister of Education reminded students of the importance of reading while encouraging them to develop a passion for reading.
“Reading builds self expression,” he stated. “It opens new avenues to you, so that you can foster your own relationships with your fellow students, teachers and parents.”
The Minister remarked that the Governments of St. Kitts and Nevis and the United States have had a long and fruitful mutual relationship and with their continued involvement in the region, that relationship will strengthen. He assured both partners that the Ministry will work towards the continuation of the rapport established.
“We would do our very best within the Ministry to give our strongest support to ensure that this relationship continues to ferment,” he stated.
He revealed what the donation would do for both the school and country as a whole.
“Your influence, what you have done for us this morning, would have an indelible impact on the people of this school and our country,” he said. “Reading is indispensable, it is highly valuable and we appreciate it.”
The Right Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas, in speaking to the students, reminded them that they can achieve almost anything they want to achieve if they understood the power of reading and adopted the habit of reading.
“Reading is fundamental, the more you read, the more you will find that reading is fun,” he said.” “This gift will remind you of the importance of reading and will encourage you to read.”
The Prime Minister expressed how important both reading and friendship are and thanked His Excellency Larry Palmer of the U.S. Embassy and Hands Across the Sea Inc for their generous contribution to the Saddlers Secondary School and the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The grant of US$ 1,600.00 was donated by the Hands Across the Sea Inc, in partnership with the United States Embassy in Barbados.
