Nadal or Djokovic: Who will reign? And what does it mean for Caribbean tennis players?

The final of the men’s Australian Open is gearing up to be an epic occasion. Nadal is showing signs that he wants to once again be the most powerful tennis player in the world. He has already dismissed the once unbeatable Roger Federer, with little regard for the prestige of his opponent. Thus we are seeing where one mega star is already on the casualty line.

On the other hand Djokovic is looking like a man on a mission to prove to the world that it’s his time now to rule men’s tennis. That is 2011 was only an appetizer of what is to come from him. Thus, he has no intention of bowing to Nadal. Nadal has already had his time at the top.

Thus, with these two super stars looking almost unbeatable; the entire tennis world is anxiously awaiting their matchup in the final.  It is almost a pity that one of them has to be beaten in the final.  And a lot of people are shying away from calling it.

Well fortunately, I am not afraid to call it even though I am not too confident of my choice. I will give it to Nadal simply because he had the more difficult semi-final match (against Federer).  Yes, Federer is no longer at his best but he is still a potent player.  Thus that match will in effect give Nadal the needed confidence to defeat Djokovic.

I am not saying that it will be an easy task, because Djokovic is at the top of his game.  But, I am sure all the coaches including Nadal’s would have watched continuous replays of his matches to have formulated a plan of action against him.  Thus, let the best man on the day win!!

Tennis is not a sport that Caribbean athletes are very competitive in.  And to be honest, I do not think that we will ever be very strong in that sport. So I think we should create our own regional competition where our athletes compete against each other.  In that way more of our athletes will compete on a professional level as against an amateur level.
