Police in Montserrat have charged popular fife player John Jones with the murder of his fiancé Anolda Fenton, 54, whose body was discovered in her Brades home Saturday morning.

Jones, 45, was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison on the Emerald Isle, following a court appearance for the capital offence.

Police Superintendent Charles Thompson said the Preliminary Inquiry into the matter is set for May 14.

While the accused was unable to secure bail in the Magistrate’s Court, he was advised that he could apply to the High Court, which has the authority to grant bail for the indictable offence.

This is the first murder to have occurred in Montserrat since October 2008.

The senior police officer told OBSERVER Media that investigators have recovered a cutlass believed to be the murder weapon.

The deceased sustained chop wounds to the upper body and St Lucian pathologist, Stephen King, went to Montserrat yesterday to perform the autopsy.

Earlier this week, Superintendent Thompson said they learned of the incident at about 4 am Saturday, when a report was made to Police Headquarters.

A week before the murder, the two, who were set to be married on December 22, had a violent dispute and a restraining order was granted against Jones.

On average, Superintendent Thompson said, Montserrat records one murder every five to six years.

A 2011 estimate indicates the country’s population is just over 5,000.
