Guyana in Firm Control Against Barbados

Poor fielding by Barbados turned what looked at first to be a close encounter against Guyana into a total domination by the men from the ‘Land of Many Rivers’.

On day three of the WICB Regional Four Day Game between Barbados and Guyana at Kensington Oval, Guyana easily gained first innings points as they racked up 441 runs, comfortably surpassing Barbados’ 317, on a day where the Bajans were made to toil long and hard in the field. Skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul led the fight for the Guyanese with a well-played 125 not out – his 61st first class century.

In reply, disaster struck early for Barbados as left-handed opener Omar Phillips was caught at forward short-leg by Leon Johnson for just two runs to leave Barbados on 5-1. Nightwatchman Miguel Cummins on nought and opener Kraigg Brathwaite on three will resume today, with Barbados still needing 119 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

Guyana started yesterday on 187-3 with Narsingh Deonarine on 63 and Ramnaresh Sarwan on 19. Deonarine went on to score 84 before he was caught at mid-wicket by Cummins off Jonathan Carter. Sarwan, who had been dropped on Saturday when he was on 15, went on to score 58 runs.

With the score on 286-7 just after lunch, the game looked to be anyone’s for the taking. However, dropped catches and generally poor fielding all around helped Guyana to surpass the Barbados total of 317 with relative ease.

Debutant Miguel Cummins had a rough baptism, and disappointingly it was mostly because of his team-mates. Cummins had the misfortune of having three dropped catches off his bowling, one of which was tailender Brandon Bess who went on to score 33. Together with Chanderpaul they would put on a whopping 115 runs for the last wicket.

The only highlight for Barbados was the five-wicket haul recorded by fast bowler Christopher Jordan. He got the scalps of Assad Fudadin, who was trapped leg before on Saturday; Sarwan, who was caught out; Christopher Barnwell was bowled for zero; and he comprehensively bowled Veerasamy Permaul and Ronsford Beaton for six and seven respectively.
