Former student of the Basseterre High School, Julear Hobson was on Wednesday (Mar. 14) awarded for Best Performance in CSEC 2011 for St. Kitts-Nevis, with 13 Grade One passes.
The quiet 17-year-old achieved her thirteen grade one passes in May, 2011 at the age of 16 while in BHS’ 5g1. She received a Grade One in the following subjects: English A, English B, Mathematics, EDPM, Geography, Caribbean History, French, Information Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Food and Nutrition, and Human and Social Biology.
According to the young scholar, who now studies French and Biology at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, attaining such outstanding CSEC (CXC) results was no easy feat. She said it took a lot of hard work and dedication to her studies.
“It took a lot of hard work and mental preparation and it really paid off. If you really want to achieve something work hard from the beginning, be dedicated and manage your time well,” Hobson explained.
She said her career aspiration is to enter the medical field, and she hopes to study Oncology or Cardiology at a university level.
“My favorite subjects are the sciences and although I haven’t decided exactly which field I will pursue, I am leaning towards cardiology or oncology,” she told The Observer.
Julear’s proud parents Learie and Judith Hobson, along with school Principal Carlene Morton, were on hand at the Basseterre High when she was presented with an award from CXC Assistant Registrar Cleveland Sam. He commended the teen on her excellent performance and encouraged the student body to set their sights on achieving as many subject passes as possible. He said top Caribbean students in various fields of study are rewarded with a full college scholarship in the area of their choice.
A very proud Mrs. Hobson said because her daughter exhibited self-motivation from the beginning of her academic career, she simply provided support and encouragement. Julear had made her intentions clear, she said, that she was aiming to get top scores in all of her CSEC subjects.
“She said Mommy I want to get best performance in CXC this year. I told her just do her best and even if she doesn’t get top student we would still be proud of her. From the start she has always been very driven towards excellence and has placed first in every class since Maurice Hillier Primary School,” she said, adding that her daughter had achieved top awards for her performance in Mathematics and Science end of term exams in 4th form.
“Sometimes she would be up in her books and I would tell her she should go to sleep and she decided she wasn’t going to bed unless she finished whatever project or assignment she was doing.”
According to Mrs. Hobson, after writing her exams last year her daughter “tracked CXC like a hurricane” online awaiting the results.
Julear told The Observer that when she saw her results she was “ecstatic” and knew immediately that it was a great achievement. She said she found out much later on, after the Ministry of Education issued a press release, that she had achieved the best CSEC results in the Federation.
Mr. Hobson said Julear had made him and her family and friends very proud and had surpassed even his high expectations. He said 2011 was a good year for the family as Julear achieved best CSEC results and he, singing as Mighty Honesty, had won Most Popular Song for carnival’s breakout hit “Sing Stupidness”.
Julear’s younger sister is a 5g1 student at the BHS and is preparing to write CSEC exams in May this year. When asked if she thinks her sister can outdo her, Julear responded only with a sly laugh.
