Bodies of US plane crash victims found off Jamaica coast

Date:

World news. The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority announced Wednesday the recovery of the bodies of the U.S. couple who died four months ago when their small plane crashed in waters northeast of the island.

The remains of Larry and Jane Glazer and the wreckage of their plane, a single-engine Socata TBM700, were retrieved by Eclipse Group, Inc., a U.S.-based firm, the authority said in a statement.

The Glazers took off Sept. 5 from Rochester, New York, bound for Naples, Florida.

When the couple failed to respond to repeated calls from air traffic controllers, the U.S. Air Force scrambled two F-15 fighter jets to trail the plane as it flew for several hours at an altitude of 25,000 feet down Florida’s east coast toward Cuba.

The F-15s broke off their pursuit when the small plan entered Cuban airspace.

“The aircraft was deemed to be proceeding without pilot control, when it disappeared into the sea approximately 19 miles north of Port Antonio, Jamaica, in about 3,000 meters (9,836 feet) of water, in the early afternoon” of Sept. 5, the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority said.

The search by Jamaican authorities was called off “based on the assessment that there was a minimal probability for a successful rescue and recovery operation, under the existing conditions,” the authority said.

But the Glazer family hired Eclipse Group to undertake the salvage of the aircraft and to search for the remains of their loved ones.

“The operation commenced on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 19 miles north of Port Antonio, with technologically advanced, underwater detection and recovery equipment from the vessel MV OCEAN PIONEER,” the aviation authority said. “The debris from the aircraft along with human remains was recovered unto the vessel, where the Eclipse Group team carried out post-recovery and preservation arrangements.” Article courtesy http://latino.foxnews.com
