Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar Monday announced that her country will collaborate with Jaipur-based Shankara Group of Institutions for training of women, especially in the fields of agriculture and health.

Addressing the institute’s convocation ceremony as the chief guest, Persad-Bissesar said that Trinidad and Tobago plans to have technical collaborations with the Shankara Group and to begin with, the Caribbean island nation will have a training exchange programme in agriculture.

“We focus on education and women empowerment. This techincal collaboration will be wonderful and meaningful experience for our women,” she said.

“Economic empowerment of women is very critical for sustainable development and women participation in agriculture and home industries has gone up. We want to create a knowledge-driven, people-centric society,” said Persad-Bissessar, who was here as the chief guest of the annual diaspora conclave – the Pravasi Bharati Diwas (PBD).

She said she was trying hard to provide opportunities to women and women empowerment is an issue very close to her heart.

“Only way to come out of poverty is education. In Trinidad and Tobago, we have universalised primary and secondary education and now with the help of institutes like Shankara, we will achieve the same in higher and technical education as well,” she added.

She also inaugurated the main building of the Shankara International School, the state-of-art Sir C.V. Raman Auditorium and awarded degrees to the students of PGDM course during the convocation ceremony.

Welcoming the prime minister, her delegation and other dignitaries, Shankara Group of Institutions chairman Sant Kumar Chaudhary said: “It is a historical moment for the institute and we will be very happy to join hands with Trininad and Tobago for mutual benefit. Shankara will extend its full support in the field of technical education, health and agriculture as the group has tremendous proven expertise in these areas.”
