Workers at the Port of Port of Spain may be back on the job, but several private sector organisations are calling for an immediate resolution to the impasse between labour and the Government.

The three-and-a-half day strike by Port workers, led by the the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU), ended yesterday at 3 p.m.

In a statement Monday, the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association (TTMA), the Supermarkets Association of Trinidad and Tobago, the Greater Tunapuna Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Chaguanas Chamber of Commerce said the issues between labout and Government hampered national development, especially in light of the global economic situation.

The release said the business community has championed a three-way approach between Government, labour and the private sector. It called for an urgent meeting with all stakeholders to address the inefficient systems in place at the port, and to reach a national consensus regarding solutions to several lingering issues including bureaucracy, poor productivity, and port congestion as it affects the cost of living in Trinidad and Tobago.
