I am Queen Mary

A 23ft statue of a black woman I am Queen Mary – which questions Denmark’s colonial past – has been unveiled in Copenhagen.

The sculpture was revealed at the end of the centennial year commemorating the 100th anniversary of Denmark’s sale of the Virgin Islands to the United States in March 1917 and challenges Denmark’s role in slavery and the commemoration of its colonial past.

Danish artist Jeannette Ehlers and Virgin Islands artist La Vaughn Belle teamed up to create the monumental public sculpture.

This project is the first collaborative sculpture to memorialize Denmark’s colonial impact in the Caribbean and those who fought against it.
