Spiritual commentary. There are times when our heavenly father asks us to do something that takes us out of our comfort zone.  As Christians we may not understand why or how we are going to do what God called us to do but, “We walk by faith and not by sight” 2 Corinthians 5:7.

We must trust our heavenly father because he is Jehovah Jireh our provider.  Genesis 22:14 “And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.”  God provides us with the necessary help to carry out his mission.

Through the provision of food, strength, protection, supportive people and discernment.  February is Black History Month in America.   The movie Selma named after a city in the southern state of Alabama stars Oprah Winfrey, and David Oyelowo.

In 1965, people of colour were allowed to vote however in the state of Alabama the elected officials made it difficult for people of colour to vote.  The movie emphasised negotiate, demonstrate, and resist.

Dr. Martin Luther King negotiated with President Johnson, led peaceful demonstrations where his followers of different ethnicities, ages, and genders were often hurt, or beaten to death by police, and other rebels.  He resisted when he reached the bridge and the police allowed him and his followers to cross the bridge, he fell down on his knees at the bridge and prayed to God for guidance.

Dr. King turned back and walked away from the bridge leaving his followers bewildered but, he listened to and obeyed God.  Many people sacrificed their time, money, and lives for the right to vote and other civil liberties.

The movie Selma highlights the love between the Dr. King and his wife Coretta.  Coretta Scott King fought for  Martin Luther King Day.  It showed how the FBI followed Dr. King and his follower’s every move via wires and surveillance.

There were times where Dr. King had doubts but, his supporters encouraged him through songs, reminding him of his sermons and bible verses.  Matthew 6:26-27 “26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
