This is our third panel touching on ‘gas’. MHT has hosted earlier panels to consider the effects of the nascent petroleum and gas industries on the environment (June 2022) and to discuss the pros and cons of the gas-to-energy project (December 2021). Both are available on our YouTube Channel. The GTE project is now expected to cost in excess of USD 2 billion. It will be the largest project ever undertaken by the Guyana state.
There is still a marked absence of consensus that it is the optimal choice for Guyana. Rawle Lucas, an economist, was invited to review an earlier public energy project (Skeldon Co-generation Plant). Dr Thomas Singh, an economist, was invited to review two recent papers – one outlining Guyana’s Gas Monetization Strategy and the other questioning the wisdom of Guyana’s GTE project. We also issued an invitation to Exxon Mobil (in charge of constructing the gas pipelines for the GTE project) to participate in the panel. They declined, a day before the panel.
We have adopted a vacant chair policy and included a few questions that we had hoped they might address.
