Singer Whitney Houston’s death this week in Los Angeles shocked the world. The Queen of Pop died at the young age of 48; and while the cause of death is unknown, there are several reports leaking that prescription pills were found at the scene.

While Houston was familiar to so many across the world, many of those same fans don’t know much about her aside from her singing success.

1) Whitney Houston, born on August 9, 1963, came from music business royalty. Her mother, Cissy Houston, was a backup singer for the likes of Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin.
