The T & T High Commission, London Takes Pride in Our Nation’s Liberty

LONDON, 14th September 2012 – H.E. Garvin Nicholas led the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission’s daylong celebration of our beloved nation’s Jubilee Independence with an Inter-Faith Service at St. Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge on Saturday 8th September.  The Thanksgiving Service took the theme ‘Pride In Our Liberty’.

The service started with His Excellency escorting the National Flag of Trinidad and Tobago to the front of the church. Warrant Officer Class 1 Grantley Dick, of the Trinidad and Tobago Cadet Force acted as flag-bearer accompanied by John Medina, who served in that role 50 years ago when a Thanksgiving Service was held at Westminster Abbey in honour of our Independence.

Members of the Shouter Baptist, Muslim and Hindu Community were invited to read passages from their religious texts in honour of our country’s 50 years of Independent governance. His Excellency had asked that readings be done by young members of the religious communities.

“It is very important in moments like this that we reflect on where we have come from so that we can better guide our young people. It is in their hands that the future of our nation lies,” said H.E. Garvin Nicholas.

It was a vibrant and moving service that featured a solo performance by Trinidadian tenor Ronald Samm of “You Can Tell The World” as a tribute to our twin-island Republic. Indian Classical dancer Rohini Kumar, The London Adventist Choir and calypsonian Alexander D’Great also performed during the ceremony.

At the end of the service as the National Flag was being escorted from the church by His Excellency, drummer Kent James and members of Ebony Steelpan joined together for a rousing musical performance that had the congregation dancing in the pews and waving their flags.
