Thus this award is just another accolade in the many achievements that Usain has received in his short life. Thus he is truly on his way to becoming a legend; something he has publicly stated he wanted to become.
On Friday, November 4, 2011, the University of the West Indies, Mona officially bestowed the title of doctorate onto him for his achievements in athletics and more importantly because he is a member of the Racers Track Club, which trains on the University campus.
Thus unlike most of the other young people who had to spend at least five years in a post-graduate programme before they can be called a doctor. Well, this is just one of the perks of being the fastest man alive; you can forego school to get a doctorate degree.
Inevitably eyebrows will be raised and questions will be asked; not whether he deserved it, because he does, but whether it is too soon. It is no secret that Usain is a man that likes to party and have a good time. I am not saying this is a bad thing, because that is the mentality of most young men in Jamaica.
Therefore is it wise to put so much responsibility on him at such a young age. Because with this new position comes a certain level of accountability and he already has the Order of Jamaica.
Thus if he should be caught on camera at a popular party dancing and enjoying himself, eyebrows should not be raised because that is who Usain is. And being called a doctor will not change his perception of himself. Well who knows life is unpredictable.
But if history is any indicator of one’s future behaviour well then let us hope it is not. The Order of Jamaica did not stop him from declaring his allegiance to the infamous Gaza led by Vybz Kartel. None the less, congratulations Dr. Usain Bolt!!!
