Ghana: Otumfuo urges Ghana, Jamaica ties

The Asantehene (Overlord of Asante),Otumfuo Ose Tutu II, has called for stronger economic ties between Ghana and Jamaica for mutual benefit of their people.

 

Accordingly,this should be in the spirit of South-South co-operation.
The Asantehene noted that the current global crises demanded effective and pragmatic efforts by both developed and developing countries to adress problems of socio-economic development.
This was said when former Jamaican Prime Minister, Persival Noel James Paterson, paid a courtesy call on Asantehene  at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the Ashante Region.

tremendous development of its tourism industry and expressed the  hope that the former Premier’s visit would enable the two countries to share experiences and strengthen their co-operation.

According to Otumfuo, he was confident that it would additionally help to strengthen the cordial relations between the two countries.
On his part, Mr Paterson said Ghana and Jamaica had related well over the years and hence he was in the country to assist to take the relationship to new heights.
He praised the Asantehene for his efforts and various initiatives to help transform the living conditions of the people.

The former Premier later toured the Manhyia Palace Museum, the Centre for National Culture and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Brief Profile of Otumfuo Ose Tutu II Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the 16th Asantehene, King of the Asante. He ascended the Golden Stool on 26th April, 1999. He is a direct descendant of the founder of the Asante Kingdom Osei Tutu I.
Born on 6th May, 1950 and named Barima Kwaku Dua, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the youngest of the five children of Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, Asantehemaa (Queen mother of Asante). From early childhood, Barima Kwaku Dua came under the tutelage of his Uncle, Oheneba Mensah Bonsu who had been enstooled as Hiahene in 1952.

He set up the Otumfuo Education Fund to generate resources, effort to provide opportunities for quality Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Vocational Education not only in his Kingdom, but also in Ghana generally. In 2000, he embarked upon a vigorous campaign to draw attention to the benefits of individual/group sponsorship of the education of orphaned children. Over the first five years, the Otumfuo Education Fund has benefited over 4,000 students at various levels of education.

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has won great admiration from home and abroad through his leadership qualities hence been touted as “King Solomon”.
