Delaware State University sophomore Kelly Pelz-Butler (Silver Spring, Md.) has been selected by the Guyana Football Federation to represent the Guyana Women’s U20 National Team for the World Cup Qualifying Stage II in Cuba.

“I am absolutely thrilled for Kelly to have this opportunity,” stated DSU head coach Nitan Soni.  “She is a quality player that has grown in confidence this past year.  The experiences that she will encompass over these next few weeks playing internationally will just enhance her skills and her contributions to our team.”

Pelz-Butler and her Guyana teammates will compete in three games over a five-day span.  Guyana will take on Cuba this coming Saturday and will follow up with contests against Trinidad on Monday and Puerto Rico on Wednesday.

Stage II group winners and best runner-up qualify to the CONCACAF Finals in the first week of March 2012 at a location yet to be determined.  World Cup Finals will take place from August 18-September 8.

This past season, Pelz-Butler scored two goals with a .700 shot on goal percentage for Del State.  She also recorded five points in her role as a midfielder.

Pelz-Butler, and her twin sister, Darcy Pelz-Butler, a defender with the Lady Hornets, were selected for the team because of their Guyanese roots on their father’s side of the family.  Darcy will not be competing for the team due to an injury suffered at the end of Delaware State’s 2011 campaign.
