IT was a poor and disappointing turnout at the Female Calypso Bacchanal; however, history was made when Queen Anastasia won the crown for the fifth time, a feat that has not been done by any other female queen.

Queen Anastasia who gave a strong passionate performance while onstage sang ‘I love Calypso’.

The show was held last night Dec. 17, at Carnival Village with a total of 13 female calypsonians competing who all gave spirited performances but to an almost empty venue.

According to Sylvester Anthony, during the announcements of the results, the judging system used in the calypso shows is the High and Low system where the highest and lowest scores of competitors are thrown out for each competitor.

He announced that there was a tie for first runner-up and that tie was broken by abandoning the high and low system and determining the winner by using the scores of all the judges. To determine the first runner-up an average of all the scores was then calculated. When this was done the tied contestants were separated by two points.

That person who placed first-runner-up was newcomer Queenie G who sang, ‘Guide Me’ while former four-time Calypso Queen, Singing Jackie placed second runner-up with ‘Look in the Mirror’.

In the third runner-up position was Lady Diva who gave a spirited performance with ‘Rock the Boat’.

The show started off about 8:20 p.m. with Sha-Angel who was followed by Queen Kibie. The other females that performed were Miss Independent, Singing Jennifer, Singing Jackie, Lady Gem and Singing Angie.

Two reigning female monarchs from St. Lucia Queen Monelle and Trinidad’s Queen Asche gave performances as side acts along with the newly crowned junior calypso king, Singing Solution.

The house band for the night was Legends and the hostesses for the evening were Unoma Allen and Toni Frederick.

The show ended sometime around midnight as there was no Best of the Rest competition this year.
