Healing Power Of Deep Sleep – Sleep Your Way to Better Health

Lack of sleep is a very common condition that is affecting millions of people around the globe. In fact, a recent report from Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of the United States stated that more than a third of the population get less than 6 hours of sleep at night.

What many people do not realise is that, this has severe and profound implications for health.

Medical experts claim that getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep nightly is highly recommended in order to avoid the negative effects of sleep deprivation. The reality is however not how long you sleep, but how deeply.

There are four sleep stages but it is only in stage 3 and 4 (deep sleep) that the healing repair and anti-aging processes are being carried out. Many people spend insufficient time in deep sleep stages 3 and 4.

Countless studies worldwide also show that chronic sleep problems can lead to a myriad of physical and emotional health problems such as depression, memory loss and elevated blood pressure to name a few.

Long Term Effects of Deep Sleep Deprivation

People who are suffering from chronic deep sleep deprivation have shown that their physical and mental health state are operating very poorly, and some consequences of sleep deprivation are more dangerous than just feeling drowsy and tired the entire day. A few of these examples would be:

Body Clock Dysregulation – Another danger of sleep deprivation is the dysregulation of one’s body clock. This side effect might not sound as serious as bacterial infections or death, but it leads to some of the deadliest diseases that has taken many lives, which are obesity, heart disease(s) and diabetes. This is because sleeping and eating patterns of living things have a circadian rhythm, and sleep loss appears to stimulate appetite as well as cravings for high-carb and fatty foods.

Memory Lapse and Loss – One of the most common signs of sleep deprivation are memory loss and memory lapses. People who tend to sleep less than the recommended amount are likely to develop false memories, lapses and memory loss, and other pre-dementia symptoms.

Delayed Reaction Time – One of the most dangerous effects of sleep deprivation is the body’s delayed reaction time. Researches in Australia and New Zealand reported back in 2000 showed that sleep deprivation has the same negative effects of drunk driving. To this day, there are thousands of documented cases of vehicular accidents that were caused by sleep deprivation due to driver fatigue.

Microsleeps – People who have significant sleep deprivation are susceptible to microsleeps. Microsleeps occur when a person is doing monotonous tasks such as operating machinery, driving or even just by watching TV. These microsleeps along with delayed reaction times are one of the leading causes of road and occupational hazards.

Alzheimer’s Disease – According to numerous research findings, there have been growing evidences regarding sleep deprivation and Alzheimer’s disease. Without deep sleep, the brain doesn’t have the capability to flush out the toxins that build up in the brain. These toxins – amyloid plaques have been linked with the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Heart Disease – Recent studies also suggest that sleep deprivation can increase the chance of cardiovascular diseases. This can happen regardless of the person’s weight, habits as well as age. According to HealthiNation’s data research, 3,000 adults aged 45 and up, who have less than the desirable amount of sleep, are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke as opposed to people sleeping for 7-9 hours every night.

Elevated Blood Pressure – According to Mayo Clinic’s findings. Linking sleep deprivation and blood pressure. People who usually have less than 6 hours of sleep are more likely to have an elevated blood pressure. These individuals are more prone to develop high blood pressure that can lead to more devastating health impacts.

Stress Hormones – The United States National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (NLM-NIH) stated that sleep loss can raise a person’s cortisol levels. Having too much cortisol in your blood can cause brain toxicity, backaches, headaches, fatigue and more. NLM-NIH concluded that sleep deprivation can delay the recovery of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
