Shacking Up! The end of personal space!

Relationships develop in stages, the getting to know you, loving in spite of and because of, accepting flaws and imperfections and the decision to take the commitment to the next big step. The step of moving in together can be daunting especially if you have never done it before. Sharing the same living space, whether married or unmarried will not always be the wonderful and romantic haven that we all dream of.

Love will conquer all is simply a cliché. Living together requires patience, compromise and an understanding of who is responsible for what. Before you decide to move in, you may need to think about what the situation will be based on your knowledge of each other’s personality and habits and also know that there will be surprises as the old Jamaican saying goes “see me and live with me is two different thing.” Before you decide, you simply need to accept certain things.

Firstly, do not expect your partner to change his/her habits. It is difficult enough to try and change yourself so don’t expect that it will be easy for you to change someone else.

Sharing Space

Compromise is mandatory as you will have to learn to cope with habits that may be annoying. Also, this is not only for your partner but also for you as there is likely to be some habit that your other half will find just as annoying as well.

Communication never fails so talk to your partner openly about any concerns or issues. Try to tell him/her how you feel and also give them time to react, invite him/her to share their opinions and listen keenly.

Keep the romance alive by having dinner out, movie date night, taking trips to places you always wanted to visit. Always ensure you make time for each other as everyone needs attention and to know they are appreciated.

Lastly, even though you are now sharing the same space, you don’t have to do so twenty four hours daily. Ensure you are still on the social scene with friends and family. Girls night out or a Boys only roll out is a good way to catch up with friends. If you don’t feel like that then join a charity group or organization, book club or a new hobby.
