Tomorrow January 2nd, Sister Nancy celebrates her 60th birthday. Her original voice has resonated for decades and she has become synonymous with female power in the Dancehalls since her hit track “Bam Bam” released on her 1982 album One, Two (Techniques) produced by Winston Riley.
Sister Nancy began as a dancehall DJ and singer in the late ’70s and early ’80s, alongside her brother Brigadier Jerry. She collaborated with artists in the 80s and 90s including Jonny Osbourne, Yellowman, Capleton and Angie Angel on over two dozen EPs and singles, also releasing tracks with Henry “Junjo” Lawes on Greensleeves Records.
Bam Bam is feted as the most sampled track in reggae. Hip-hop stars such as Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Main Source, Too $hort, Chris Brown, and Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth have sampled the track and Beyonce has performed it live. Recently, it was featured on the Netflix series Maid.
