Six Dominican-Antiguan contestants are getting set to compete for the La Femme Creole 2011 crown tomorrow.

They are Abina Dowe, Cherisa Abel, Janelle Jno-Lewis, Sabina Joseph, Sharifa Warrington and Tenisha Sebastian. The contestants will battle it out in swimwear, performing talent, interview, and Dominica’s national dress called Wob Dwyiette. For the first time this year, contestants will also be competing in a portrayal segment, which will require them to depict a prominent Dominican personality.

“This will be a show with a difference, especially with introduction of our portrayal segment,” said Neva Casimir of the Dominican Cultural Express, which is coordinating the show. “We’re just asking everybody to come support the Dominican Cultural Express. This is our fifth year of staging the show.”

The line-up includes Dominica’s 2011 Road March king Sour Sour, host and comedian Alex Bruno, and Dominica’s director of culture Raymond Lawrence, among other surprises. Action begins at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre at 8 pm.

Winner of the pageant will receive $1,005, a trip for two to any LIAT destination in addition to a weekend for two at any Rex resort.

In the past, the winner has taken part in the regional Wob Dwyiette pageant, but it’s been plagued with financial challenges, Casimir noted.

The Dominican Cultural Express has taken on the mandate to keep the culture of the Nature Isle alive in Antigua & Barbuda. This is done through its yearly La Femme Creole pageant, which mirrors one held in Dominica for the country’s Independence.

The group also participates in Antigua’s Carnival parade.
