Once upon a time Haiti was regarded as one of the richest nations in the Western Hemisphere. After defeating French colonists the French sough compensation by issuing Haiti a 21 billion dollar bill for lost property. What was this lost property? The slaves on the plantations at the time. Haiti has not recovered from this unjust debt as one problem led to the next leaving Haiti now one of the poorest countries in the world.
