In Jamaica news, recent reports have confirmed that Jamaican athlete Asafa Powell has been tested positive for a known banned substance provided by the former world record holder at the recent JAAA National Senior Championships held in June.
Asafa Powell who has run the most sub10 100m runs in history, is the third fastest man in the world under Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay and is a Commonwealth, Olympic and world relay gold medallist. He is one of Jamaica’s most successful sports icons.
Asafa Powell posted a statement on his Twitter account that reads:
“I will confirm that a sample I gave at the National Trials in June earlier this year has returned with “adverse findings.” The substance oxilofrine (methylsynephrine) was found, which is considered by the authorities to be a banned stimulant.
I want to be clear in saying to my family, friends and most of all my fans worldwide that I have never knowingly or wilfully taken any supplements or substances that break any rules. I am not now- nor have I ever been- a cheat.”
Whilst Asafa Powell proclaims his innocence, recent reports submitted from the Jamaican Observer stated that a physical trainer associated with former world record holder was last night held and questioned by Italian police about the presence of the banned substances found.
The detained trainer, Chris Xuereb who is Canadian, joined the MVP Track Club that is responsible for Asafa in May.
Italian police officers raided his hotel room at the MVP base in Italy where a number of unexplained and suspicious items were found.
Asafa powell statement continues to read:
“My team has launched an internal investigation and we are cooperating with the relevant agencies and law enforcement authorities to discover how the substance got in my system. I assure you that we will find out how this substance passed our rigorous internal checks and balances and design systems to make sure it never happens again.”
Asafa is reported to be feeling devastated by the ordeal. The case continues…
