Edwin is a Trade and Economic Development Consultant whose career began at Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Finance, then he became Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade Industry and Tourism.
He later served as East Caribbean States Ambassador to the European Union and Belgium and St Lucia’s Ambassador to France, Germany and its Permanent Representative to the WTO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Edwin was Special Envoy of the Heads of Government of Dominica and Saint Lucia. Until last year he was Head of Trade and Regional Cooperation at the
Commonwealth Secretariat.
He has written and published extensively on trade and commodity issues and was educated at the Universities of the West Indies, Manchester and the Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies.
A fitting replacement for High Commissioner Garvin Nicholas who is unable to serve on the panel due to matters of state, Edwin Laurent will speak on ‘What it means to be a member of CARICOM (Caribbean Community) and the relevance of the CSME (CARICOM Single Market & Economy);’
