Single and loving it?

“I’m feeling like a star, can’t stop my shine, I’m loving cloud nine, my head’s in the sky, I’m flying solo” Whoever is not familiar with Jason Derulo’s US and UK billboard hit song is either too old to know it or living under a rock.

The lyrics glorify the pluses that come with being single. Yes, the exhilarating rush of freedom as there isn’t any compromise, no fighting, not feeling guilt and best of all no one to answer to.

That’s right, absolute freedom to do you and be you. Being single brings new prospects, new paths to self discovery and fulfillment. That sounds great and totally enticing, right?   With all the wonderful advantages, what’s not to love?

Ha, think again on that one. Just like everything else in this journey of life, there is always the down side.

Jason Derulo

Being single means coming home from work or play to an empty apartment. Silence is mostly your company unless interrupted by sounds emitting from electrical devices designed to keep you entertained, mainly your television or stereo. Appreciation garnered from yourself for a great meal that you prepared is just not the same as having another person to enjoy it with. The biggest downside to being single is being on the “hunt”.

The “hunt” means being on the prowl; the search to find that seemingly elusive special individual. That special someone that will, as the diehard romantic would say, simply make life worth living.  Don’t kid yourself by thinking you love being single and never want it to end. It is drilled socially in every human being, pervasive in nature and arguably innate for human beings to search for the other person that makes them feel complete.

It’s not just simple biology with the need to procreate to keep our species from going extinct but an intense emotional and psychological pattern that drives us to keep on the hunt even after previous successful ones ended in disaster, pain and in some extreme cases a restraining order.
