Riverland Mas Presents “JUNGLE BOUYON FEVER “ for its 2011 Miami Broward One Carnival Band.

This year’s theme evolved from the 1980’s creation of Bouyon music, a musical genre developed from an infusion of traditional songs, dances, and beats in the Commonwealth of Dominica, such as Bèlè, Jing-ping, Quadrille, Chanté mas, Lapo kabwit, Mazook, with a twist of Cadance, Zouk, and other styles of Caribbean music, like Soca and Calypso.

It is a very unique style of music created by the W.C.K. band (Known then as Cornell, Wakas and Keith) of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The Group’s president Elka Cools-Latigue, explains the reason for choosing this year’s theme. “We normally choose themes to suit Dominica’s culture, people, music and lifestyle. This year, I was looking through some old WCK CDs and found that song, ‘Jungle Bouyon Fever.   It suited Dominica perfectly,” he said.

The three sections are:

Bush Doctors – These Bush Doctors will be holding down the fort and taking care of business. By trying to regulate de temperature, they are bush doctors, who will be administering “de natural medicine, de bush medicine, is de best medicine”.

Bouyon Fever – These carnival revelers are on fire.  A red-hot shimmering haze blazing into the jungle. The word Bouyon is defined as a stew, a mix of flavors and spices. This describes the music, a Bouyon, out of many came one new unique beat.  And it has become popular in other islands of the Caribbean, this new type of music emphasizes on the use of modern technology with a strong keyboard rhythmic patterns.

Jungle Bouyon – Jamming down the road, the jungle pulsates with the rhythms of bouyon, there is fire every where, deep in the heart of the jungle the inhabitants are on fire, a raging fever, a fever for Mas, a fever for bacchanal, a fever for the Pounding Rhythms of Bouyon music backed up by the W.C.K. Band and Blackberry Sound Crew. It will be a cultural infusion.

This year is the 7th year Riverland Mas has organized a carnival band for Miami’s Carnival. The group’s founder/President Elka Cools-Latigue said, “Although I am in the front line of this all, it has been a team effort “

The group is calling all Dominicans to come to Miami/Broward carnival on October 09, 2011 to celebrate in Dominican style, on the streets of Miami.  It will be a festival to be remembered. Space is limited.
