Finding Your Identity?

Just over a year ago I wrote an article titled ‘Who Am I’. I issued a challenge to ask yourself  who you are aside from your academic qualifications or lack of them, your employment, parental, financial status or labels received from others, did you find yourself?

This year I’m challenging you to find your identity. The question of ‘Identity’ arose following my meeting various women from different socio-economic classes in a foregin country. It pained my heart and many times I became teary eyed having listened to conversations from these precious ladies and observing their environment. It was evident that these ladies didn’t know their identities. The ramifications of not knowing who you are will result in poor decision making, toxic relationships and low self esteem. But what is the meaning of the word ‘Identity’ and how do we find it?

One of the interpretations of the word ‘Identity’ derived from Merriam Webster’s  Dictionary is ‘sameness of essential or generic character in different instances’¹. Breaking down this meaning, the question to ask ourselves is who as women do we want to have the same character as? Who is our role model, Who are we actually listening to for guidance? Whoever has the loudest voice in our life is generally the path that we choose to follow.

As a woman of faith I believe our identity is in God I found my true identity in Him. God is consistent and His character never changes unlike man’s². He desires for us to be the same as Him as we are made in His image and likeness3. When we receive our identity from God we will not be subject to every wind of doctrine, trend and influences. We’ll be able to make wise decisions and stand in His strength regardless of what is going on around us. We will look into the perfect law of liberty which is God’s Word, be guided and protected by it.

We also will not allow ourselves to be conformed to the societal whims of this age but have a strong desire to be transformed into the ways and principles of God. We will avoid all types of toxic relationships, no longer make bad decisions and live a life of joy and peace regardless of life’s hurdles.

Take note that with every season there’s a new fad in town, what is en vogue now may not be in a few days time which causes instability in one’s spirit, soul and body.  Many look to reality (which indeed is not reality) TV or indeed celebrities for help. The women in the programme ‘Love Island’ do not typify nor reflect the lives of the women I met on the streets recently, please do not be fooled into believing that your answer lies in this TV show. I’m encouraging you today to please look for your identity in God because His plans for you are for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope!4

Until next time, remember you are beautiful and wonderfully made – With love Amanda x
