In a series of matches organised by former vice president of Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA), Jerry “Energy” Williams who now resides in Dominica, the Antiguans opened their trip with a 90-64 victory over Grand Bay last Thursday night.
Brian “Hollywood” Matthew starred during the show with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while there were contributions of 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Marlon “Buju” Charles and Percy Adams.
The Antiguans’ dominance continued on Friday night when they defeated the reigning Dominican champions, Blazers by a 79-74 margin. Matthew top-scored once more with 21 points and grabbed 14 rebound while Coy Quinland sank 16 points, Kelvin Simon had 14 and Errol Quallis ended with 10.
Antigua rounded off their campaign with a 100-72 victory over Williams’ team, Taix Bouche Bense, with Charles doing the damage for the visitors with 27 points. Matthew contributed with 24 points while Quinland had 20 points and 14 rebounds.
An executive member of the basketball association and one of the chief organisers of the Business League Basketball Competition, Arlene Josiah, hailed the trip a success and thanked both sponsors and fans who travelled with them to show support.
“The trip was very successful and I must say thanks to the sponsors Cool & Smooth for donating the uniforms to us and again, I want to thank Foster George who brought his family to support us. Edwin Williams also; he brought down his family and Sharrie and the other spectators who came down to support the guys and on behalf of the ABABA executive, I just want to tell the 11 players, job well done,” she said.
Josiah added that the matches were very well supported despite the fact that it was also carnival celebrations in Dominica.
“The games were well supported (and) I must say the crowds came out and supported the game; after carnival in Dominica and they had quarterfinals for their calypso show I was really surprised to see how much turnout we had and it was real successful.”
Included in the squad is Marlon “Buju” Charles, Bryan “Hollywood” Matthew, Kevorn Cornwall, Eric Joseph, Ika Grayman, Ade Jarvis, Percy Adams, Kelvin Simon, Errol Quallis, N’Degwa Maloneand Coy Quinland.
The team was coached by Cleon Benjamin, while Mandy Weatherhead, who is also a co-ordinator of the Business League, travelled with the team.
