Anguilla Represented at Recently Concluded Caribbean Statistics Meetings

Anguilla was represented at the recently concluded CARICOM sponsored Caribbean Statistics meetings and regional statistical research seminar held from October 24 – 28, 2011 in Belize City, Belize, geared at harmonising the statistical system in the region.

The Thirty-Sixth Meeting of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS), held from 24-26 October, examined a full agenda which covered matters relating to economic, financial and investment statistics as well as demographic, social, environment and living conditions statistics.

Some of the areas discussed and reviewed under the various themes, included the developmental work being undertaken in countries of the region to upgrade to the United Nations System of National Accounts 2008 as well as the challenges being experienced in country as it relates to the Merchandise Trade Statistics, International Trade in Services as well as the International Comparison Programme.

The meeting also recevied a report from the eigth and ninth meetings of the Advisory Group on Statistics (AGS) on the draft model statistical bill and its principles, the diagnostic assessment and update of the regional statistical work programme among others. The need for and update of Statistical Legislation within the Community has become urgent in the face of difficulties encountered in gathering critical data for decision-making.

The Twenty-First Meeting of the Regional Census Coordinating Committee (RCCC), held on the 28th of October, examined the 2010 round of censuses currently underway in Caribbean Countries, reviewing the challenges experienced and being experienced by countries who have completed the census enumeration; those who are currently in the process of completing the enumeration as well as those yet to commence the enumeration phase. Issues relating to data processing as well as plans for dissemination were also reviewed.

Four research papers were presented at the Fourth Regional Statistical Research Seminar. The seminar is a forum for the production and presentation of research and analysis on statistical issues both technical as well as administrative. Presentations this year were made by Bermuda – Information and Communication Technology: The Bermuda Experience, CARICOM – Organisation and Submission of Databases in CARICOM, St. Lucia – Some Results from St. Lucia’s Census 2010, Aruba – Aging on Aruba: Challenges fro a sustainable society and Belize – A Comparative Analysis of Intercensal Immigration in Jamaica 1970 – 2001.

Anguilla in the past made a presentation – “An Automated Civil Registry System – The Case of Anguilla” and“Vital Records Management”.
