ST JOHN’S, Antigua — On Monday, a drug operation conducted by the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Control Policy (ONDCP) in Antigua, and supported by the ABDF Coast Guard, resulted in a seizure 285.78 lbs of compressed cannabis, 181 marijuana seedlings and four mature plants.
The estimated wholesale value of the compressed cannabis amounts to approximately EC$1,143,120. The area of operation was on the eastern end of the island, where searches were conducted revealing the contraband. Gareth Walker, a 39-year-old Antiguan national, and Javan Akez, a 22-year-old Jamaican-born Antiguan citizen, were detained in connection with the seizure.
This success comes on the heels of an earlier seizure a month ago, when the ONDCP seized 341 lbs of cannabis. Both men are charged with possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to transfer, being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and drug trafficking, while Gareth Walker is additionally charged with cultivation.
The accused were due to be arraigned in Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
