World news. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), continues to invite entries for their World Food Day 2014 poster competition. World Food Day is celebrated on October 16th
The competition is open to children ages 5 to 17 years old and prizes will be awarded to the winners in three categories: ages 5-8, ages 9-12 and ages 13-17. This year the theme for World Food Day is Family Farming: “Feeding the world, caring for the earth”. The theme has been chosen to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farming by focusing world attention on its significant role in eradicating hunger and poverty, providing food security and nutrition, improving livelihoods, managing natural resources, protecting the environment, and achieving sustainable development, in particular in rural areas. Background information about the theme, including a short video, as well as contest rules and prizes can be found on the FAO website at www.fao.org/WFD-poster-contest
Parents and teachers are encouraged to get involved in helping children learn about the theme and express their ideas through art. All entries are to be provided as digital files uploaded to the FAO website. Digitally produced artwork, scans or photos of artwork are all acceptable.
