Staff Writer - Kerran Monroe

Last year international dancehall deejay Mavado was charged with assault and grievous bodily harm, malicious destruction of property and assault, in connection with an incident which took place in Belmont St. James.  The deejay has since been found guilty of all the charges.

He is to pay an ,000 fine or serve 6 months in prison for the assault charge, on malicious destruction of property charge, he is to pay ,000 or spend 6 months in prison.

If I remember the incident correctly, the man claimed that he was beaten by members of Mavado’s entourage for not giving the deejay enough room to drive past without driving in the pothole.  The incident is not vague in my memory; however, the gist of it is that members of the entourage were involved in the assault of the man, according to the man.

It is incidents like these that give dancehall and its stakeholders a bad name.  I hope Mr. Brooks has learnt his lessons and will try his best to avoid situations like this one, especially with him signing his new deal with Cash Money.

You cannot afford to lose that visa again Mavado, not now when your life seems to be on track.  I assume that he has, since the incident took place approximately a year ago and we have not heard of him in any such incidents since.

Another thing I want to touch on is the penalty of the crime.  A hundred thousand dollars in total; that is chicken feed to Mavado.  The point of the penalty is to serve as a deterrent to the crime and right now that really is no deterrent to an entertainer who is making millions of dollars.  Oh well, I guess it was somewhat of a misdemeanor so some may argue that the penalty does in fact fit the crime.
