This year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual Notting Hill Carnival Pioneers Community Festival which takes place on Sunday 13 August 2023 from 12 pm – 8pm at Horniman’s Park, Kensal Road. W10. This year is a significant milestone with the festival. It marks the 50th anniversary of Leslie Palmer’s intervention into Notting Hill carnival and the 10th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival Pioneers, and we must acknowledge, Leslie Palmer 80th Birthday. Historically, Notting Hill Carnival, as we know it today, owes a great gratitude to the foresight of Leslie Palmer.
His vision for the carnival in 1973 has served as one of the most important cultural agendas in London, which has since incorporated every single culture and ethnic group that make London their home; not to mention those who congregate for the event from every corner of the globe. We all come to know and accept, carnival is a journey of resilience, and where diversity is embodied in unity and will always stand as a testimony to the tireless struggle against injustice and discrimination.
Leslie Palmer founded the Notting Hill Carnival Pioneers to honour those heroes that stood against all odds to ensure that the artistic artform of those that arrived here remain an indelible tapestry to the London cultural calendar. While COVID 19 deprived us of three glorious years of cultural extravaganza, Notting Hill Carnival Pioneers Festival will return to the Horniman’s Park for a family day of cultural entertainment and to pay tribute to those still with us, and those departed and those who have dedicated their lives to the longevity of Notting Hill Carnival.
This year, the musical entourage will be as eclectic as the London tapestry from local to international artiste including Winston Francis, Lord Suffer, Sir Coxsone, One Love, Trishana, Portobello Choir, Prince of Judah, Pan Diva, and broadcasting live, Portobello Radio. This is a Free Family event and will be held on Sunday 13th August 2023, 12 till 8pm. The nearest tube stations are Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park. Buses: 52, 228, 23, 7, 70, 295 and 316.
