In November 2013, IsisMas hosted a Carnival Costume Design Contest to find five (5) designs for the 50th Celebrations of the Notting Hill Carnival. Over 40 designers from around the world participated. An independent panel was formed and presented with the costume designs, the designers’ names and country of origin was withheld from the panel, only the designs were shown. Seven (7) design sketches were selected and the designers were invited by IsisMas to prepare their samples.
The costume designs and finalists are:
– Shining Dawn by Aisha Brathwaite and Takita Barlett from Romford, UK
– Guardian Angels of Carnival by Jodie Rowland from Hayes, UK
– The Spirit of Gaia by Kate Goss from Bedford, UK
– Neo Tinker by Keisha Brathwaite, Las Vegas, USA
– Genesis by Natalie Phillips from Northolt, UK
– Rebirth of the Phoenix by Sheereen Brizan, Grenada, Caribbean
– Alpha New Moon by Tanya Parris, Hayes, UK
On 25 August 2014; bank holiday Monday, the Notting Hill Carnival celebrates 50 years. The beginnings of the Notting Hill Carnival are associated with civil rights activist Claudia Jones with her indoor parade in Paddington. From that early start, Russ Henderson and friends took the carnival celebrations onto the streets in the 1960s. In recent years, Colin Salmon actor in James Bond has masqueraded in costumes at the Notting Hill Carnival. Singer Rihanna can be seen in elaborate costumes at Crop Over carnival in Barbados.
