Lip Piercing For Caribbean Males: Do or Don’t?

Once in a while, I am surprised by the things individuals will do to their bodies in an attempt to make a statement or for the sake of adornment. The familiar pierced ears are now commonplace for men as it is for women. What is now a commonplace trend among young adults and teenagers is body piercings, especially females in the Caribbean. There is the numerous piercing on outer ear and not just the lobe, nose rings, navel rings, tongue, lips brows and those unmentionable places. While I do admit that some women’s appearance is heightened by the piercings, it is not for everyone.

Call me traditional or old fashioned, a man with several piercings is one thing I consider not appropriate for a male. It is interesting how times have changed. A man with both ears pierced is now accepted as a norm when in the past it was frowned upon especially in Caribbean society. It has been slowly integrated into the culture so much that it is now accepted and no longer considered taboo.

Nonetheless, there are still individuals who will push the envelope. For instance, there are men who pierce tongue, brow, their lower lip and rather than the traditional ear lobe piercing, pierce several places as well. This is going over the norm and way too over the top.

It is quite painful getting piercings and also must be carried out by a professional and kept clean during the healing process to avoid infection. I have asked one specific gentleman why did he chose to have a lip piercing and his response is that he looks good with it. Also that there are girls that actually like it and finds it quite appealing. I guess the adage “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” rings true.

I don’t have any qualms about people doing what they want to as an individual can do whatsoever he or she pleases with their own body as this is their divine right. In my view, it seems a bit feminine and a definite Don’t in my book.  All I can say is that I definitely will not be seeing or bringing home a guy with piercings to meet the folks.
