Ram Goat

Earlier we looked at my introduction to Pamela, Angel’s best friend and their invitation for me to join them in the cafeteria to chat about the upcoming inter collegiate sports day. Pamela didn’t strike me as a very nice person…don’t ask me why but my spirit just didn’t take her and I always believed in what my grandmother always told me, she said, ‘son this is a spirit taking world…’.

When we got to the cafeteria and found a table with three chairs we all sat down and had a general chat about school work, teachers, classes and then the inter collegiate sports day. The chat was OK and at one point I thought to myself, ‘these girls are actually real cool.’ It wasn’t long after that thought that Pamela uttered the faithful words, ‘I’m hungry,’ which was very quickly supported by, ‘me too,’ from Angel. Ordinarily those statements wouldn’t have bothered me except in this case they were both looking straight at me!

Everything in me tried to ignore the possibility that these girls actually meant for ME to treat them, I ran every possible scenario that would exclude me from the responsibility of spending my week’s pocket money in one go! But none made sense…I had to face the fact that this was it…I was summoned by the apple of my eye to feed her and her friend. It had been my lucky day; my number was called and I was the fortunate one to step up and make the ultimate sacrifice for arguably the most beautiful girl at the school, Angel.

As though through some out of body experience I felt myself rise to my feet and head for the food display counter for the orders that seemed to hit me over the head like a hot frying pan. The pain I felt however wasn’t that of the imaginary frying pan it was from the realisation that I was hastily moving up in a queue destined to relieve me of my entire week’s food allowance – EC(Eastern Caribbean) $20.00! Now that hurt!

For some strange reason I had the feeling that even the cashier was in on the ‘hijacking’ with Pamela and Angel as she tallied up the items with this sinister look on her face…Then the hammer dropped when she announced, ’EC18.50 please!’ For what seemed an eternity I lost all respiratory function and choked slightly before reaching for my last and only EC $20.00 bill that was neatly folded three times and placed in a secret compartment of my trousers. I swallowed swiftly and reluctantly handed it over, upon which I was given the items and my EC$1.50 change…I took one look at it and thought…Life Sucks!! Ram Goat.

I never really understood what bullying was until I saw an advertisement on the TV
