Well, off the tracks anyway. The 2011 track and field male sprint season belonged to Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake; incidentally they never faced each other in any race on the track. Usain Bolt was crowned International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) male athlete of the year edging out Yohan. Now, Yohan has been named Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) athlete of the year edging out Usain for this title.

We are going to hear whispers going around as to whether or not Blake deserved the award over Usain. In light of the fact that Usain won the international award thus he should have also won the local award. They both had an exceptionally brilliant year so they are both equally deserving of the award.

I would like to acknowledge Glen Mills coach of Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake for being awarded coach of the year. This award went unchallenged of course, to be the coach of the two fasted men in 2011 is already an achievement in itself.

Also, I would like to say congratulations to Veronica Campbell-Brown for being named Female athlete of the year. I should add that this is the second consecutive year that she is getting this said award. Like Glen Mills her award went unchallenged.

The ceremonies and awards giving for this season are officially over; so the athletes can now take a well needed break before starting preparation for the upcoming year.

Now to the shock of the week! We in the Caribbean enjoy watching European club football. So we feel strongly about our adopted clubs in Europe as we do our local club. Thus fans of Manchester United and Manchester City were really disappointed last Wednesday when they both dropped out of the Champions league in the first round.

Thus we have a situation where the two top teams in the English Premier league, based on points standing, are missing from the premier competition in Europe. So it is now left up to Arsenal and Chelsea to restore some pride for the English Premier League.

Simply put, the competition will not be the same without these power houses.
