My fellow Grenadians, the 50th Anniversary of our independence marks an important milestone in the history of our young nation. It also offers us the
opportunity to reflect on both our past and our future and to be proud of all that we have accomplished as a sovereign nation.
As we reflect on our journey over the past 50 years, let us not forget the sacrifices of our ancestors who, through their struggles, paved the way for the freedom we now enjoy.
Our tri-island State has accomplished much over the past 50 years.
We stand on the firm foundation of a stable democracy. We have had inspiring,
courageous and visionary leaders, all of whom have contributed to the progress of our nation. We have made monumental strides in such areas as sports,
infrastructure, education, health care, and, last but certainly not least, the arts and culture.
When we hoisted our new flag on February 7, 1974, we pledged to build and advance as one people; one family. Let us ask the Almighty God to guide and inspire us over the next 50 years, as we together navigate the challenges that will certainly arise, and let us move forward as a united people with commitment and dedication to our beloved nation.
Let us also ensure that this year’s Independence theme – “One People, One
Journey, One Future” will remain etched in our hearts and minds over the next 50 years.
Happy golden jubilee everyone!
Cecile La Grenade, GCMG, OBE, Ph.D, Dsc Governor General
