ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Wednesday November 2, 2011 – A team of consultants from the World Bank’s private sector arm – the International Finance Corporation (IFC) – is in Grenada to assist with plans for the establishment of a teaching hospital.??The team includes legal, financial and communications consultants, who will be working with the government and the St. George’s University (SGU) over the next 18 months, to develop and deliver the public private partnership. ??“We hope the IFC would be back not too long from now to provide its report to the cabinet of this country so we can have the timelines established for the beginning of the process. It’s quite a lot that has to happen,” health minister, Senator Ann Peters told a media conference.??In the meantime, she said the existing plant would be used to roll out a component of the clinical teaching programme with SGU assistance to provide data and experience “to guide the way forward when they finally have the facility on the ground.”??The IFC team is meeting with the prime minister, government ministers, and representatives of Her Majesty’s Opposition and SGU, among other interest groups.?“We are taking our time on this because we do not want to repeat the mistakes of building a physical plant without technical and professional input,” Minister Peters said.??“We want to ensure that when we have a product on the ground in Grenada, it is a product approved by the international bodies, approved by persons who are qualified to building hospitals and we want to ensure that whatever is the final product, brings significant benefits to the people of this country.”??A site has not yet been chosen for the new hospital.

The government and SGU signed an agreement late last year to pursue developing the Teaching Hospital.
