Easter – The Bun And Cheese Holiday?

Another holiday is upon us, for those Christian believers who celebrate Easter.  But for those of us who do not celebrate the holiday, this can still be an exciting period for us with the hosts of parties lined up for the Easter weekend.  Yes parties, as Jamaicans, we have to party every holiday and Easter is no exception, even if we don’t celebrate the holiday.

Traditionally in Jamaica, when we think of Easter we think of Easter bun and cheese.  Easter bun is different from the regular old bun.  The Easter bun usually has in raisins and other small fruity, substances, the size of raisins.  This is one of the main reasons, I hated Easter, along with all the crucifixion movies shown on television during that period, which I was subjected to watch by my parents and to top it all off, there were no home cooked meals on Easter, instead, we fed on bun and cheese for the entire weekend and it was not even ordinary bun.  I can never understand why some people love Easter bun so much.  The only part of Easter that I enjoyed, growing up was going to the beach on Easter Sunday, but as the years went by, we stopped going to the beach, making Easter a holiday filled with things that I hate.

It was not until I was old enough to attend street marches by myself and attend the events put on at this time of the year that I began to appreciate this holiday.  Yes I know, Easter is not a time to party, the meaning goes deeper than partying but quite frankly, the other way of celebrating, where I can appreciate the true meaning of the holiday is just not as interesting or as appealing, as the alternative way of celebrating.  This includes, getting wet, getting paint on me and dancing to the Soca music.  Yay Easter!
