This article will not go into the details of the incident but will instead just comment on the matter.
Firstly, this is why selectors should not pledge allegiance to any artist or organization of artists. Selectors, even if they have their biases should not let it be known because these kinds of biases lead to incidents like what happened at Quad last week Friday night.
According to the ZJ this all started from a Blackberry message sent to him by the artist, asking him “A Gaza yuh seh?” to which the ZJ reportedly replied, “A music me seh.” The ZJ assumed that the answer, the artist was looking for was, “A JOP me seh.” Apparently the ZJ was playing too many of Vybz Kartel’s songs.
When selectors become loyal to any particular artist or group of artists, said artist or group of artists believe that the selector is obligated to play their song(s) even if the song(s) is not good enough and not play the songs of their enemy. Assuming that the selectors are not ignorant to this culture within Dancehall, no selector should fall into that trap.
As it relates to the artists, they need to realize that, a selector has the right to play whatever he feels to play, if he wants to play crap, that is up to him, as it is up to the patrons to go to events he is playing to listen to him play. No selector should be subject to play what any artist tell him to play.
