Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has expressed sadness at the passing of former chairman of the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association Peter Ramrattan in London, England after a short period of illness.

Prime Minister Spencer, currently attending the 54th Meeting of the OECS Authority in St Lucia, expressed condolences to widow Nella Ramrattan via telephone. He said the former chairman had served Antigua & Barbuda and the tourism sector well, and would be greatly missed.

“Peter had a special fire within him for the tourism sector and worked tirelessly to ensure that Antigua & Barbuda remains out front in the industry,” the PM said.

“During my time as leader of the opposition, and since becoming prime minister, Peter would call at any time of the day and night to discuss an idea he had to improve the industry.”

PM Spencer said Ramrattan, who managed the Hawksbill Hotel in his constituency for many years, was also community-minded, and was always ready to support community development projects.

“Tourism was in his veins, and his love for Antigua & Barbuda, his adopted home, had no bounds,” the PM said. “He will be greatly missed.”

Ramrattan, who also worked with the Antigua Sailing Week Committee and was general manager of the Rex Halcyon Cove Resort, will be buried in the United Kingdom.

A memorial service will be held in Antigua at a date to be announced.
