High Commissioner Garvin Nicholas met with the Tourism Development Company representatives for the United Kingdom Ms. Natalie Duggan and Ms. Victoria Taylor at his Belgrave Square office on Monday 10 October 2011.
His Excellency outlined his concerns that Trinidad and Tobago is not as visible to prospective tourists as other competing destinations are in the United Kingdom.
His Excellency made it clear that he viewed the TDC representatives as partners of the High Commission in carrying out the mandate of the government.
Further, High Commissioner Nicholas brought the TDC representatives up to speed on the main cultural and trade projects on stream for 2012 namely: the five week Trinidad and Tobago Village which is supposed to be a showcase of culture, music, art, spoken word, film, horticulture, cuisine, fashion and business opportunities; and the launch of a Trinidad and Tobago styled Carnival in Cardiff, Wales.
The High Commissioner also took the opportunity to outline some of the sport tourism possibilities that he is pursuing which includes a new made for television golf tournament as well as the more traditional tennis, yachting and golf tournaments.
It is the High Commissioner’s belief that Trinidad and Tobago has the potential to become a sustainable tourism economy that can stand side by side with the energy economy.
His Excellency also believes that Trinidad and Tobago will benefit most by distinguishing its tourism product and not linking it to a regional brand that already gives the wrong impression of Trinidad and Tobago as a nation in terms of location, culture, people and products on offer.
The TDC representatives thanked High Commissioner Nicholas for his excellent observations and advice and promised to work closely with him on promoting Trinidad and Tobago to the United Kingdom market.
