Travel Tips: The Art of Packing Lightly

Tourism Writer Jackie Michael

On our escorted group journeys I have seen a variety of efforts on capsule packing some have scored 10 out of 10 whilst others received the dreaded excess luggage charges. We all love a larger and varied wardrobe but unless you are flying premium or upper-class you will have to be more diligent in meeting the requirements to travel lighter. I am sure everyone wants to avoid the embarrassing and frustrating act of opening their suitcase on the airport floor to remove the items they now feel are no longer necessary due to the impending charges.

So for those who feel it is necessary to pack 7 pairs of shoes and excess outfits that we end up not wearing read on and print a copy to remind you of the travel essentials.

Does this look familiar...?

When packing clothes the thing to remember is that we always end up having our favourites – so here are a few guidelines

Clothes Packing

  • Pick a colour schemes and coordinate your clothes so that you can are able to interchange pieces
  • Count the amount of days you are going away for and review what you will be wearing on each day
  • Utilise fashion accessories as they can also make the same clothes look radically different
  • Try on your outfits before you leave and only pack the clothes you love wearing

To help you pack your paperwork, accessories and toiletries here is a simple checklist we give our clients.

Paperwork

  • Passport
  • Ticket
  • Insurance papers
  • Photo I.D (driver’s license, etc)
  • Money/ cards

Accessories

  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Scarves
  • Costume Jewellery
  • Camera/phone
  • Phone charger
  • Journal/pen
  • MP3
  • Book/Kindle

Toiletries

  • Mosquito repellent
  • Sun Tan lotion
  • After sun cream
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste ( small)
  • Shower Gel (small)
  • Deodorant (small)
  • Essential make up
  • Face creams/cleansers (small)
  • Medication and vitamins

Use sealable clear bags for your toiletries.  The bags protect clothing from any spillage and the clear plastic enables you to see what’s inside, making it easier to find things. Using the sealable bags for your liquid containers now also corresponds with the airport security checks.  If you have any more packing tips let us know.

The main thing to remember is that you are going on holiday to relax, refresh and refuel – so don’t weigh yourself down, travel lightly. Let me leave you with the words of legendary designer Diane Von Furstenberg ‘if you pack lightly, you live lightly’.
