The teachers had left the students on their own in search of food. The first boy had ventured out into the sea when the waves began to misbehave. The second seeing that his friend was in difficulty went to his aid; unfortunately neither boy returned alive. Indeed, this incident was quite heartbreaking.
But, the question really is how many of us would risk our lives to save another? We cannot say because not many of us have been in a life and death situation. And the reality is we don’t really think about being in a life and death situation.
But that young man from St. Andrew College committed a selfless act which in the end cost him his life. Some persons will say it was a silly move. But I think that he deserves a medal for courage and bravery that the government should give to his family.
We are living in a culture where as a nation we are becoming more and more selfish towards each other. Thus a young man who risked his life in order to save his friend is something that we must recognize as the true spirit in which we must live. I am of course speaking figuratively.
I am advocating for us to return to a culture where we respect and protect each other. Let the act of bravery by that young man be a symbol for a renewed hope and togetherness of a nation. While the young men’s lives are lost; let them not be in vain.
Indeed, not everyone can be a hero but everyone has the capability to be human. And this simply means that we must live in unity and harmony.
