The Star Newspaper has released its nominees for the People’s Choice Awards in various categories.  The categories range from artist of the year to worst dressed artist of the year, so it is clear that this award recognizes the good the bad and the ugly.  In this issue, I will be going through the categories and picking my winners for each.   In the interest of word count this will be a three part article.  So here goes:

Best Male Deejay – Nominated in this category are, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Vybz Kartel, Aidonia and Elephant Man.  In this category I give the win to Vybz Kartel.  Despite the fact that his year was cut short for obvious reasons, he still dominated right throughout the year with his pre-jail songs.

Best Female Deejay – Without a doubt this award goes to Tifa. With hit after hit, such as Matey Wine, Swaggin and many others, she cannot be denied this award.  The other nominees are, Ce’Cile, Lady Saw, Timberlee and Spice.  Despite Spice’s international venture with her Missy Elliot collaboration, that apparently was not enough, as the song was a flop in my eyes and as a result she was still outshone by Tifa. Best Male Singjay – This is a tough one, as the nominees are Movado, I Octane, Bugle, Chino and Protoje.  Bugle and Chino are definitely out of the equation.  The struggle is between Movado, I Octane and Protoje.  Protoje did some work in the earlier part of the year but Movado and I Octane have remained consistent throughout year.  In a battle like this it comes down to who had the most international exposure and that would no doubt be Movado, hence I have to give him this category.

Reggae / Soul Singer Cherine Anderson

Best Female Singjay – And the nominees are, D’Angel, Tanya Stephens, Keida, Ikaya, and Queen Ifrica.  This category is clearly lacking in nominees, hence the nomination of people like Tanya Stephens, and Keida whom I have never heard of before.  Anyway, this category is between D’Angel and Ikaya.  I cannot pick a winner here, as even though I have narrowed it down to two I have not heard much from either artist this year.

Male Singer – The artists up for this award are Tarus Riley, Romain Virgo, Jah Cure and Gyptian.  Where is Christopher Martin?  Anyway, I have a personal bias towards Virgo so of course I am going to choose his as my winner.

Female Singer – Tami Chynn, Cherine Anderson, Etana and Alaine are the nominees in this category.  Again we see a category with nominees that make us wonder if nobody else was doing well throughout the year.  Oh well in that case I have to say Cherine Anderson.  She has been on tour with some pop star whose name I cannot remember right now.  Furthermore, her collaboration with Daniel on the song rebel is one of the hottest songs right now.
