As part of the CaribDirect “The Caribbean And You” seminar series and again, in conjunction with Sankofa Televisual we will be holding a discussion on CARIBBEAN (IN)VISIBILITY ON BRITISH TV/CINEMA SCREENS, on Thursday 5th December 2013 at the Dominica High Commission 1 Collingham Gardens, London, SW5 0HW.
This event which will start promptly at 6.30pm is being held in honour of the late comic genius and Kittitian, Felix Dexter who was due to chair this seminar.
The chair / moderator of the event is the talented
Angie LeMar – Radio presenter, TV / Theatre actress, and Talk show host
With the brief exception of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, tears on the “X-Factor” and news reports about crime, Caribbean countries and British Caribbean people are almost entirely invisible in the UK – and that is despite a sizeable Caribbean population in Britain over the past 60 years!
That situation throws up five possible questions for TV/cinema screens:
1) why has that invisibility developed?
2) what impact does it have?
3) how should it be addressed?
4) who decides we must look back 20 years to The Real McKoy for relevant programming?
5) does it matter anyway?
Come and have your say at this special seminar with an expert panel.
