A poll from National Geographic of the best food markets in the world has placed St. Lucia’s Castries market in third place, just behind Union Square Greenmarket in New York and St. Lawrence Market in Toronto. St. Lucia’s Tourist Board and Castries City Council are said to be delighted at the accolade and recognition from National Geographic, who wrote of it: “Opened in 1894 and still occupying the original orange-roofed building, this market in St. Lucia’s capital is the island’s largest and loudest. Stock up on island spices (star anise, mace, cinnamon); breadfruit, bananas, and other tropical fruits; condiments like hot-pepper sauce; hot food, including rotis; or the fishermen’s catch. Planning: Next to Jeremie and Peynier Streets, the market is open daily (except Sundays), but is best on Saturdays.”
The Top 10 were as follows:
- St. Lawrence Market, Toronto
- Union Square Greenmarket, New York City
- Castries Market, St. Lucia
- Ver-o-Peso, Belem, Brazil
- Mercado Central, Santiago, Chile
- Kreta Ayer Wet Market, Singapore
- Kauppatori, Helsinki, Finland
- La Vucciria, Palermo, Italy
- Cours Saleya, Nice, France
- Borough Market, London, England
