Niko Resources has spudded a well at the Stalin prospect off Trinidad, the Canadian independent’s first offshore probe off the Caribbean island.

The well, which is being drilled by the jack-up rig Rowan Gorilla III in 100 feet of water, is the first of three wells Niko has planned for Block 2ab.

The block is located off Trinidad & Tobago’s eastern continental shelf.

The Stalin-1 well, named after the popular calypso great Black Stalin, will be drilled to a total depth of 8800 feet.

It is targeting the Oligocene-age Angostura sands, which are producing in the Angostura field about 23 miles east of the Stalin prospect, Niko said in a statement on Thursday.

The well will test a large anticlinal feature made up of multiple thrust sheets, Niko added.

Niko operates the block with a 35.75% working interest. Its partners include Petrotrin with a 35% stake and Centrica on 29.25%.

The company estimates that Stalin holds has between 600 million and 800 million gross unrisked barrels of oil equivalent in-place.
